Raise your hand if there’s at least one charcuterie board at every party you go to these days? Once only found on classy restaurant menus, charcuterie has exploded in popularity.

A charcuterie (pronounced shar-KOO-ta-REE) board is a platter that contains meat, various cheeses, bread and/or crackers, and a variety of fruit and spreads. It can be enjoyed as an appetizer or snack, though many people (like me!) love to create small ones for meals too.

Fun fact: Charcuterie has origins reaching as far back as 15th century France. Literally translated, this french word means “the products of a fancy pork butcher.”

In the past a traditional charcuterie board included mostly meats and cheeses (and maybe some olives and fruit), but over the past few years this trend has shifted to include nearly any kind of cute collection of finger foods you can assemble on a board.

Thanks to the power of social media, this classic appetizer has become a mainstay of entertaining in many homes. I personally love to create themed charcuterie boards for get togethers. Finger food is so easy for sharing, and the photos are great for sharing online too.

  • Semi-firm cheese, like cheddar cheese
  • Soft Cheese, like goat cheese, brie, ricotta or Boursin
  • Vegan Cheese
  • Fresh Fruit
  • Traditional meats, like prosciutto, sopressata, genoa salami, mortadella, and Spanish chorizo
  • Spreads, like fig jam or red pepper jelly
  • Fresh Veggies

The options are endless for creating unique charcuterie boards, too. Here are just a few:

  • Valentines: It’s all about the sweets! Incorporate conversation hearts, gummy bears and other candies.
  • Christmas: Get into the holiday spirit by cutting out shapes with a Christmas cookie cutter to add to holiday cheeseboards.
