  • Hot Chocolate Mix
  • Milk
  • Marshmallows
  • Candy Canes or Peppermint Candy

How to Make Spiked Hot Cocoa with Vodka

Heat your milk in a saucepan over medium heat. You’ll want to be sure you’re stirring the milk frequently to prevent it from burning.

Once the milk is hot, stir in the hot chocolate mix until it’s well combined. Pour the hot chocolate into your coffee mug and add the vodka. Stir well.

Tips for the Best Alcoholic Hot Chocolate

This cozy winter drink recipe is a great option for a cold day. Here are a few ways to make your adult hot chocolate even better:

If you don’t have a stovetop, you can also heat your milk in a microwave safe mug. However, this will make the outside of your mug really hot, so I recommend pouring the milk into a different mug after heating.

The amount of hot cocoa mix or vodka can be adjusted to taste. If it’s too chocolatey for you, use less hot cocoa powder to reduce the chocolate flavor.

Any kind of milk works for this recipe. I use almond milk at home because it’s what my family drinks. However, whole milk, oat milk, soy milk and skim milk are all good options for this easy recipe as long as you heat the milk slowly so it doesn’t scald.

If you don’t have any milk, you can still enjoy this homemade spiked hot chocolate recipe using hot water. Keep in mind that it won’t be as thick and creamy.

This recipe was made with peppermint vodka, but other flavors of vodka can easily be substituted. Try vanilla vodka, whipped cream vodka, marshmallow vodka, chocolate vodka or caramel vodka.

I used vodka for this recipe because it’s what we have on hand at Christmas time. However, you can easily switch out different types of alcohol! Bailey’s Irish Cream, Kahlua, peppermint schnapps, bourbon, aged or dark rum or whiskey all work great in spiked hot cocoa. We also love to make a Classic White Russian this time of year too.

If you like cold drinks instead, add the vodka hot chocolate to a blender with ice to create an easy frozen vodka hot chocolate.

This recipe is for a single serving of hot chocolate, but is easy to double or triple as you’re using easy to measure simple ingredients.

This recipe goes great with Christmas desserts, like this chocolate fudge recipe or Christmas Oreo Ornament Balls (Oreo Truffles).

Mix things up with different toppings and finishing touches, like:

  • Chocolate sauce
  • A sprinkle of chili powder
  • A little vanilla extract or peppermint extract mixed into the hot cocktail
  • Dark chocolate chips or white chocolate chips
